Angelicum alumnus new auxiliary bishop for the Ukrainian eparchy in Buenos Aires

Sviatoslav Shevchuk, 38, who completed his doctorate in moral theology at the Angelicum in 2002, was ordained a bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Lviv, Ukraine, on April 7, 2009. He will be an auxiliary bishop for the Ukrainian eparchy in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Father Robert Christian, O.P., vice-dean of the theology faculty, flew to Ukraine for the occasion, where he joined a crowd of several hundred for the four-hour ceremony. Bishop Sviatoslav has been rector of Holy Spirit Seminary in Lviv for the past two years, and can be proud that the seminary has over 200 students for the Lviv eparchy alone.

At the end of the liturgy, Bishop Sviatoslav thanked all those who have been instrumental in his life--his parents and siblings who were all present, his seminarians, and the Angelicum. Speaking in English, he noted the warm welcome he and his Ukrainian confreres had found at the Angelicum, and he praised the doctrinal rigor he found there.

After joining other Argentine bishops on April 20 for a week-long ad limina visit to the Vatican, Bishop Sviatoslav will move to his new post in Argentina.
