Fr. Alejandro Crosthwaite, OP Closing Remarks and Final Appeal
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Brothers and sisters, Illustrissimi:
Another exceptional alumnus of the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, the late John Paul II, who defended his doctoral dissertation in our Theology Faculty here in 1948, stated the following on his first visit to the Angelicum as pope on November 17, 1979:
"My visit to the Angelicum… gave me an opportunity to relieve the numerous memories of the two years during which I was a student at [this] University. It is a joy to me to realize that the Angelicum has continued in the study, the teaching, and the diffusion of the truth of revealed doctrine, through the disciplines of theology and philosophy and their related sciences… I also noted with pleasure the signs of the vitality which abound in the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas: it gives evidence of quite fresh vigor through which it is able, by new scientific approaches, to respond to the emerging cultural demands of our time."
Of course, in a University, the work of renewal is never finished. It is always necessary to renew the teaching staff and to face up to ever-occurring needs, even in the economic order, which are always on the increase in the domain of culture.
The Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas provides the students of five continents, and especially candidates for the priesthood, the opportunity to live close to the Chair of St. Peter, in a widely renowned center, ever radiating ecclesial communion. These students, with their ethnic and cultural differences, constitute a powerful sign and a real experience of the catholicity of the Church. At the Angelicum, they are able to profit from the riches of science and from the teaching of many outstanding professors. Most especially they can acquire here a theological formation faithful to the Magisterium, which is the guarantee of the true Catholic faith, and here they absorb a profound sensus Ecclesiae. The sum of these experiences, brought back to their local churches, and melded into their pastoral and missionary activities, accrues eventually to the advantage of the whole Church.
Every university or institution possesses its own line of orientation. The University of St. Thomas Aquinas has the clear obligation to pursue with all possible diligence the understanding and teaching of philosophy and theology under the inspiration and doctrinal authority of the Angelic Doctor: St. Thomas Aquinas.
On behalf of the Administration, Staff, Faculty and current students of the Angelicum it pleases me deeply to thank you for being here tonight in recognizing our outstanding alumnus Cardinal Foley as well as making such an exceptional effort to assure for the Angelicum the means to carry out its mission under the best possible conditions. Your financial support will furnish the University with a solid and dependable base for its continued work, and in a special way tonight, for our Middle Eastern students in honor of the mission of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre. You are an indispensable element of this project. It is our lively desire that all our benefactors and friends will collaborate in this laudable effort. Former students, too, dispersed throughout the world are able in this way to give concrete expression of their gratitude to the Angelicum for the service it renders, not alone to the Catholic Church, but also to the entire world of religious and human culture.
To all the benefactors of the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, to all those who bring to it their moral help and support, to all those who helped in many ways to make this night a memorable event, to our students of yesterday and today, to the Administration and to the Professors, and to your, dear Cardinal Foley, auguri, grazie mille, buona notte ed Arrivederci!
If you would like to support the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas continue its world mission of preparing outstanding Church and world leaders such as our late Holy Father John Paul II, His Eminence John Patrick Cardinal Foley, Archbishop Timothy M.
