Congratulations to Angelicum Alumna Mother Mary Assumpta

Mother Mary Assumpta Long, O.P., Mother Superior of the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, has announced the purchase of the John Paul II Cultural Center as a House of Studies in Washington, D.C. for the almost 100 sister-strong congregation. In a statement on the move, Mother Assumpta said that "We believe that the ultimate acquisition of this building... represents an opportunity that is aligned with the visions of our community, Pope John Paul II and the archdiocese of Detroit. It is a wonderful way to build upon the intention of the Center to bring the message of His Holiness to contemporary culture and promote vocations, and it provides yet another connection to his influence in our community and the incredibly generous donors to all these venerable institutions."

John Paul II is one of the most distinguished alumnus of the Angelicum.
Mother Assumpta is an alumna of the Angelicum earning a Licentiate in Sacred Theology.

Angelicum alumnus will be created a cardinal at the next consistory

Benvenuto/ Welcome BBQ 2010

Of Friars and Barbequers...

Friars, priests and lay-people, speaking different languages, in a discreetly illuminated cloister, whose fountain harmoniously blends the sound of its gently falling water to the soft Italian background music and the aroma of tender chunks of meat right off the grill – that was the Welcome BBQ 2010.

Students got acquainted with each other and with their tutors, as well as with other Dominicans from the community over mouthfuls of delicious food, while Fr. Crosthwaite moved from table to table checking that all was well. And he succeeded at that! Everything was just perfect: the ambiance, the conversations, the accompaniment…and above all the mouth-watering BBQ! The only thing that probably ran short was the virtue of temperance. The friars of the community joined the BBQ after concluding vespers, and so, those who were already into their fourth helping were obliged to serve themselves once more – so as not to keep the poor friars alone!

Finally, when it was time to wind up, one question was heard on the lips of many of the newcomers: “How often do they do this?” A question that Fr. Crosthwaite and the Angelicum need to think about...they need to do this more often!

Angelicum Alumnus visits his Alma Mater

His Beatitude Baselios Cleemis, the Major Archbishop-Catholicos, Major Archbishop of Trivandrum, Vice President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India, and an alumnus of the Angelicum visited the campus with some of his students currently enrolled at the Angelicum. His Excellency is in Rome for the Synod on the Church in the Middle East being held at the Vatican. He defended his doctoral dissertation under his director Fr. Frederick Bliss, co-director of the Interreligious Dialogue Program and Fr. Joseph Agius, current dean of the Faculty of Theology.

Angelicum alumnus will be created a cardinal at the next consistory

Pope Benedict XVI has announced the creation of 24 new cardinals, including Angelicum alumnus and current President of the International Dominican Foundation: Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington, D.C.

Twenty of the new cardinals are under the age of 80, and thus eligible to vote for the next pope.

A consistory, the event in which new members formally enter the College of Cardinals, is set for Nov. 20, 2010 in Rome. It will be the third consistory of Benedict’s papacy, after previous editions in March 2006 and November 2007.

All told, Benedict XVI has now appointed 50 of the roughly 120 cardinals who will elect his successor.

Another Angelicum alumnus destined eventually to become a cardinal, Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York, was not on the list because his predecessor, Edward Egan, is still under 80.
