S. PII V, PAPÆ

Audi, Deus omnipotens,
preces tuorum supplicum,
Pii praeclari praesulis
sollemnia colentium.

Insignis miris actibus
hic fulsit et virtutibus,
lucerna lucens omnibus
domo Dei manentibus.

Hic fuit vivens hostia
in Petri summa cathedra,
mactavit in se vitia
crucis ferendo stigmata.

Huius, o Christe, gloria
iam factus et victoria,
ipsius per suffragia
da nobis vitae gaudia.

Sit, Christe, tibi gloria
pro multiformi gratia,
qui mundi post haec stadia
das iustis vitae praemia. Amen.

A 3-Minute Preacher Alumnus

The most recent issue of Time magazine included the annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Of course, the list included movie stars, sports figures, politicians, musicians, and television personalities known to most of us. But it also included a preacher trained by the Dominicans at the Angelicum in Rome.

Click here for the full story on the Dominican Province of St. Joseph's web-site.

S. CATHARINÆ SENENSIS, VIRGINIS ET ECCLESIÆ DOCTORIS

Te, Catharina, maximis
nunc veneramur laudibus,
cunctae lumen Ecclesiae,
sertis ornata plurimis.

Magnis aucta virtutibus
et vita florens inclita,
humili mente ac strenua
per crucis pergis tramitem.

Stella videris populis
salubris pacis nuntia;
mores restauras optimos.
feroces mulces animos.

Sancto compulsa Spiritu,
ignita verba loqueris,
quae lucem sapientiae,
aestus amoris ingerunt.

Tuis confisos precibus,
virgo dilecta Domino,
nos caritate concitos
fac Sponsi regna quaerere.

Iesu, tibi sit gloria,
qui natus es de Virgine,
cum Patre et almo Spiritu
in sempiterna saecula. Amen.

Angelicum Alumnus Fr Graham Turner (November 11, 1963- April 16, 2012). R.I.P.

Fr Graham Turner, a member of the Beda College and a student at the Angelicum 2010-11, died of leukaemia on Monday 16 April., 2012. The aggressive leukaemia was diagnosed after Easter last year, and since that time Graham was nursed at both  Salvator Mundi and the Gemelli Hospital here in Rome, and subsequently in Manchester in the UK. Although a candidate for the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh in Scotland his parental home was in Lancashire, and it was there that he has spent the last 10 months. Although he was due to be ordained priest in June of 2011 – and after several planned later occasions - it was on Easter Monday of this year, 9 April 2012, as it became clear that he would not recover, that Cardinal Keith O’Brien came down from Scotland to Salford to ordain him in the hospital chapel. An account of the ordination can be found on the current front page of the Scottish Catholic Observer on http://www.sconews.co.uk under ‘Prayers for nation’s newest priest.’

Graham was born on 11 November 1963: his parents are George and Marilyn; he has a sister Susan and a brother Ian.

There will be a Requiem Mass for Graham in his home parish of St John’s, Bromley Cross, Bolton BL7 9JP on Monday 23 April at 12 noon, followed the next day  by a diocesan Requiem Mass in Edinburgh Cathedral, (Broughton Street, EH1 3JR) on Tuesday 24 April at 12.45. Graham will then be buried in the Mount Vernon Catholic Cemetery.

Angelicum professor appointed consultor for the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity

Angelicum Associate Professor for Sacraments & Ecclesiology in the Faculty of Theology and Vice-Dean of the same faculty, Fr. Robert Christian OP, has been appointed by the Holy Father as Consultor for the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity for five years.

The Council exercises a double role. First of all, it is entrusted with the promotion, within the Catholic Church, of an authentic ecumenical spirit according to the conciliar decree Unitatis redintegratio; it was for this purpose that an Ecumenical Directory was published in 1967-1970 and a revised edition issued in 1993 entitled "Directory for the Application of Principles and Norms on Ecumenism". The Council carries out this task in liaison with the various departments of the Roman Curia, whose competence includes areas that can contribute similarly to the task of dialogue of the Catholic Church and should be put to the service of its relationships with all the Churches and ecclesial Communities.

At the same time, the Pontifical Council also aims to develop dialogue and collaboration with the other Churches and World Communions. Since its creation, it has also established a cordial cooperation with the World Council of Churches (WCC), whose headquarters are in Geneva. From 1968, twelve Catholic theologians have been members of the "Faith and Order" Commission, the theological department of the WCC.
Similarly, it is the task of the PCPCU to name Catholic observers at various ecumenical gatherings and in its turn to invite observers or "fraternal delegates" of other Churches or ecclesial Communities to major events of the Catholic Church.

TEMPUS PASCHALE

Auróra lucis rútilat,
cælum resúltat láudibus,
mundus exsúltans iúbilat,
gemens inférnus úlulat,

Cum rex ille fortíssimus,
mortis confráctis víribus,
pede concúlcans tártara
solvit caténa míseros.

Ille, quem clausum lápide
miles custódit ácriter,
triúmphans pompa nóbili
victor surgit de fúnere.

Inférni iam gemítibus
solútis et dolóribus,
quia surréxit Dóminus
respléndens clamat ángelus.

Esto perénne méntibus
paschále, Iesu, gáudium,
et nos renátos grátiæ
tuis triúmphis ággrega.

Iesu, tibi sit glória,
qui morte victa prænites,
cum Patre et almo Spíritu,
in sempitérna sæcula. Amen.

Sabbato Sancto

Christe, cælórum Dómine,
mundi salvátor máxime,
qui crucis omnes múnere
mortis solvísti légibus,

Te nunc orántes póscimus,
tua consérves múnera,
quæ sacra per mystéria
cunctis donásti géntibus.

Tu agnus mitis, ínnocens,
oblátus terræ víctima,
sanctórum vestes ómnium
tuo lavásti sánguine.

Quos redemísti prétio
tui sacráti córporis,
cælo resúrgens ádvehis
ubi te laudant pérpetim.

Quorum nos addas número,
te deprecámur, Dómine,
qui Patri nos ex ómnibus
fecísti regnum pópulis. Amen.

Feria Sexta in Passione Domini

Vexílla regis pródeunt,
fulget crucis mystérium,
quo carne carnis cónditor
suspénsus est patíbulo;

Quo, vulnerátus ínsuper
mucróne diro lánceæ,
ut nos laváret crímine,
manávit unda et sánguine.

Arbor decóra et fúlgida,
ornáta regis púrpura,
elécta digno stípite
tam sancta membra tángere!

Beáta, cuius brácchiis
sæcli pepéndit prétium;
statéra facta est córporis
prædam tulítque tártari.

Salve, ara, salve, víctima,
de passiónis glória,
qua Vita mortem pértulit
et morte vitam réddidit!

O crux, ave, spes única!
hoc passiónis témpore
piis adáuge grátiam
reísque dele crímina.

Te, fons salútis, Trínitas,
colláudet omnis spíritus;
quos per crucis mystérium
salvas, fove per sæcula. Amen.

SACRUM TRIDUUM PASCHALE Feria Quinta in Cena Domini

O memoriále mortis Dómini,
panis vivus vitam præstans hómini,
præsta meæ menti de te vívere
et te illi semper dulce sápere.

Pie pelicáne, Iesu Dómine,
me immúndum munda tuo sánguine,
cuius una stilla salvum fácere
totum mundum quit ab omni scélere.

Te cum reveláta cernam fácie
visu tandem lætus tuæ glóriæ,
Patri, tibi laudes et Spirítui
dicam beatórum iunctus cœtui. Amen.
