Angelicum alumnus named new archbishop of Portland, Oregon (USA)

Pope Benedict XVI has appointed the Most Reverend Alexander K. Sample of the Diocese of Marquette, MI to be the eleventh Archbishop of Portland in Oregon.  The announcement was made by the Vatican this morning.  He will succeed Archbishop John G. Vlazny who is retiring at age 75 years old.

Archbishop-Designate Sample was born in Kalispell, MT on November 7, 1960. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Michigan Technological University in1982, and a Master of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering in1984 also from Michigan Technological University. He studied at the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN, and at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, OH, earning a Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained a priest on June 1, 1990 at St. Peter Cathedral, Marquette, MI.  Following ordination, Father Sample served as parochial vicar at St. Peter Cathedral Parish in Marquette, as pastor at St. George Parish, Bark River, MI, at Sacred Heart Parish in Schaffer, MI, and at St. Michael Parish in Perronville, MI.

In 1996 he earned a licentiate degree in canon law from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (The Angelicum) in Rome.  Upon returning to the Marquette Diocese in 1996, he was appointed Chancellor of the diocese.  He has served as a  member of the diocesan Presbyteral Council, as a member of the College of Consultors, a member of the Marriage Tribunal, Director of On-going Formation of Priests, Director of the Department of Ministry and Priest Personnel, and as Diocesan Chaplain to the Knights of Columbus.  He served as Executive Director of the Bishop Baraga Association and as a Member of the Diocesan Review Board for the Protection of Children and Young People.

He was appointed Bishop of the Marquette Diocese on December 13, 2005 and

was ordained Bishop on January 25, 2006 by Cardinal Adam Maida.  Archbishop-Designate Sample is a Member of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Sub-committee on Native American Catholics, and the USCCB Sub-committee on the Catechism.  He also serves as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe (LaCrosse, WI), and as a Member of Sacred Heart Seminary (Detroit) Board of Trustees which is affiliated to the Angelicum. 

The Mass of Installation for Archbishop-Designate Sample will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2013.

Nach ihrem Schutzpatron und Ordensmitbruder, dem «Doctor Angelicus», wird sie meist nur «Angelicum» genannt. Eine exzellente Bildungsstätte der Dominikaner, die aber auch für Nicht-Ordensmitglieder offensteht. Ihr berühmtester Ex-Student: Karol Wojtyla, der spätere Papst Johannes Paul II.

The Russell Berrie Fellowship Program is selecting five students to pursue a Certificate in Interreligious Studies at the Angelicum for the academic year 2013-14.

On January 17, 2013, The Rector of the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome received the award for "extraordinary merits in the development of friendly relations with the Slovak Republic and the spread of the good name of Slovakia in the world."

The solemn ceremony was held at the Embassy of the Slovak Republic to the Holy See. The honor was awarded to Prof. Miroslav Konstanc Adam OP by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Slovak Government,  Dr. Miroslav Lajčák, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Slovak Republic (January 1, 1993-2013).

Summa Theologica in Japanese

Ryosuke Inagaki (84), professor emeritus of philosophy at the University of Kyushu, after 52 years of works, has finally complete his translation of Thomas Aquinas' "Summa Theologica" into Japanese.  "Thomas' writings are like a piece of music by Bach, with a rhythm that facilitates its access.  Once I got the rhythm of the translation, it went very fast," stated the professor to Ucanews Inagaki press service.  He did not find his work a burden.

The scholar translated himself 20 of the 45 volumes  of the complete project in Japanese that is due to come out to the public in September. The "Summa" of the Dominican friar and Doctor of the Church, St. Thomas Aquinas (c. 1225-1274) is one of the most important theological and philosophical works of the Middle Ages.  According to the report, Inagaki who had only been baptized as a student, encountered the great theological work of Thomas Aquinas, among others things, through a U.S. military officer stationed in Japan after World War II. Later he worked on the concept of natural law in Thomas.  He came upon  the translation project at the eleventh volume. His favorite edition of the "Summa Theologica" was release in 1952 as a paper back  for the broad U.S. market titled "My Way of Life," he told Ucanews.  The title highlights the fact that Thomas had an instruction manual for people who want to be, as he wrote, "really and truly happy," says Inagaki. A total of 15 scientists were involved in the Japanese translation .  Half of them did not survive to see the last volume.  The founder of the publishing house, which is publishing the "Summa", died two days after the completion of the page proofs of the last volume.  A Latin-German edition of 34 volumes which began in 1933 is still not finished.
